Grow Creative developed a Writing for Change programme with funding and endorsement from the Ministry of Education, that has been run at Avonside Girls’ High School in 2022 and St Joseph’s School Rangiora in 2023. The programme offers journey of transformation, empowering young writers and nurturing their creative potential.
Phasing: A Literary Triumph
Writing for Change is about creativity for personal change and societal change. The programme involves a term of critical and creative writing lessons followed by a term of focus on media creation and student autonomy in creating a printed or digital publications. Avonside Girls’ High School crafted an exceptional literary magazine titled “Phasing” in 2022, while St Joseph’s School Rangiora, in 2023, created a 93-page book titled “Vision”. These publications were crafted by students who were involved in the whole process, led by Chelsea Houghton, alongside passionate educators from the schools.
Finding Their Voices
Throughout two terms, students from both schools enthusiastically explored a diverse range of genres, allowing them to discover and develop their creative voices. From the art of poetry to thought-provoking opinion pieces, from imaginative fiction to narratives reflecting on the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic, these students wholeheartedly embraced the world of creativity.
Despite the hurdles of hybrid learning and the ever-present COVID-19 challenges, these young writers demonstrated remarkable perseverance. They managed to turn adversity into opportunity, proving their resilience and dedication to their craft. This unique learning environment, combining on-site and online experiences, undoubtedly played a crucial role in fostering these essential qualities among the students.
Real-World Experience
These projects served as tangible testaments to the students’ real-world experience in all facets of writing, publishing, and promotion. Collaborating at every stage of the creations, they acquired invaluable skills that extended far beyond the confines of the classroom.
The students delved into pressing societal issues, conducting thorough research and crafting insightful essays that shed light on contemporary challenges. Their work not only showcased a deep understanding of these issues but also a sincere commitment to making a difference.
A Program of Wellbeing
It’s essential to recognize that the Creatives in Schools program, delivered by the Ministry of Education, is not solely about nurturing creativity; it also encompasses the enhancement of overall wellbeing. The participation of these schools in this program is a testament to the transformative power of creativity in education. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19 delays, these schools emerged as shining examples of the program’s potential to empower students.
